
The next word in Orton’s scope and sequence is the phonogram g as in the word “gate.” Although the g has two sounds – /g/ and /j/, only the most common hard /g/ is taught this early in the scope and sequence. Note that the “w” and the “th” found in the word “with” have not been taught yet in the scope and sequence, so it is currently a “red word.” If the student has not learned those phonograms in school, it is expected that the teacher will assist the student with that word. Again, the final -s has been added to the word “gab,” so it is fair to help some students with that word as well.
